On Jess Level...
Jess Level was lured to Spain by an attractive woman named Pilar. He went to paint and having suffered all the consequences from that choice... becomes a poor, but famous artist in that weird and beautifully complicated land.
Jess studies with Julián Gomez and Antonio Marquez in Cáceres, 1997-1999... and the light came out, as did the bull fighters, the paintings within the paintings that became the standard and Manolin de Somiedo becomes a household word for more than a few...
" ...these are rich and well painted reflection's by a different sort of Amerikan whose vision of my country is just and flattering..."
...in 1994, Jess crash's classes at the Savannah College of art and design, the New York school of art in 1995, on to teaching at a private college in Arizona where he meets the lovely Pilar, and washing up on those sunny beaches of Madrid, 10 October 1996... A new life. A new language. New rules...
The freak show begins...
" ...why would you want to waste such
quantities of paint and canvas on that son...? " Bill Papas
Portland, Oregon 1988
Maria Llános was the first to show Jess Level in 1999, Cáceres, Spain. The murals were to follow in Málaga, Granada, Lisbon, Huelva, Naval Moral de la Mata, and Asturias...
The road ends in Oviedo 2009, after many battles with both love and State, consequences that fell together from choices made, and the loss of many paintings. Jess Level lives in the Pacific Northwest, in exile.
